Asafa Powell sets world-leading time this year to win 100 metres

Asafa Powell ran the fastest 100 metres this year so far with a world-leading time of 9.84 seconds at the Jamaica International Invitational in Kingston on Saturday.

Former world record holder Powell headed strong to beat American Ryan Bailey, in second, with 9.93 seconds.

Fellow Jamaican sprinter Nesta Carter clocked 9.98 to put him in third, while fourth place was given to Andrew Fisher, who matched Keston Bledman’s previous world-leading mark of 10.01.

Powell, Bailey and Carter were the first three men to break 10 seconds in 2015.

Nickel Ashmeade won 200 metres and despite no Jamaican wins in the men’s hurdles races, Americans Aleec Harris and Bershawn Jackson were successful over 110m and 400m respectively.

The women’s 100m saw a win for Elaine Thompson ahead of Nigerian Blessing Okagbare and American Allyson Felix, while Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce was third in the 200m behind Shaunae Miller of the Bahamas and American Tori Bowie.

Christine Ohuruogu represented Great Britain to place fifth with 51.48 in the 400m behind US pair Sanya Richards-Ross, the winner in 49.95 seconds, followed by Francena McCorory, Jamaica’s Stephenie Ann McPherson and Novlene Williams-Mills.
